Learning

Scene setup

You and your Chinese friend have passed station security and entered the waiting area. The next step is to find the correct ticket gate. Instead of treating a station display as the main source, open the ticket details on your phone and read the gate number, the time ticket checking begins, and the time it stops. Then use the gate location shown on the phone together with the station signs to walk there.

Real-life note

In this scene, the mobile ticket details are the primary source for the gate and ticket-checking times. Read both the start and stop times, and check the gate location before walking there. Station signs help with the final route inside the building, but they do not replace checking that the gate number matches the current ticket details.

Core dialogue

We've passed security. Where do we go next?

朋友

Open the ticket details on your phone. The ticket gate and ticket-checking times are both shown there.

I found it. It says the ticket gate is 12B.

朋友

Right. You can also tap it to see the location of the ticket gate.

It says ticket checking starts at nine and stops at nine fifteen.

朋友

Right. Our train departs at nine twenty, so we'd better go over early.

After nine fifteen, ticket checking is no longer possible, right?

朋友

Right. Don't go over at the very last moment.

Gate 12B is on the east side of the second floor. How do we get there?

朋友

Follow the signs inside the station and go upstairs just ahead.

Okay. Then let's go over there now.

朋友

Let's go. We'll head to the ticket gate first.

Common mistakes

Small fixes that make your Chinese sound natural.

1. Keep the complete gate label

Not natural

这里写着检票口是十二。

Natural

这里写着检票口是十二B。

Why

The letter is part of the displayed gate label. 十二A and 十二B may indicate different places or lanes.

2. Separate the cutoff from departure

Not natural

九点十五开车。

Natural

九点十五停止检票,九点二十开车。

Why

In this scene, 9:15 is the ticket-checking cutoff, while the train departs at 9:20.

3. Ask how to reach an internal location

Not natural

十二B在二楼东边,地址是什么?

Natural

十二B在二楼东边,怎么走?

Why

地址 is used for a postal or street address. 怎么走 asks for the route to a place inside the station.
