First Trip to China Guide: What to Expect After Arrival
第一次来中国旅行:落地后的完整流程
Follow your first days in China from arrival transport and hotel check-in to payments, meals, city travel, sightseeing, and luggage storage.
A first trip to China becomes much easier when you prepare for the handoffs between services: border entry, arrival transport, hotel registration, internet access, payment, local travel, and departure. None is especially complicated on its own, but each may ask for a passport, a Chinese address, a QR code, or one short conversation at exactly the moment your phone is least convenient.
This guide follows the first urban trip in real order, from preparation and arrival to hotel checkout. It explains which arrangements come from law or service systems, which details vary by city and business, and which Chinese questions are worth learning. Entry policies and app interfaces change, so use the official links at the end to confirm time-sensitive details before departure.

1. Prepare the documents and information you will actually use
Start with entry eligibility. Whether you need a visa, qualify for visa-free entry, or can use a transit policy depends on your nationality, passport, travel purpose, route, and date. Check the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Immigration Administration, and the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for your location shortly before travel. Do not build an itinerary around an old post that quotes a fixed number of days without matching your passport and purpose.
Carry the original passport and any required entry document, and keep secure copies separately. Save your first hotel's name, Chinese address, telephone number, and booking confirmation offline. The Chinese address is useful for a taxi driver; the reservation and onward-travel information may also help when you need to explain the purpose and plan of your visit.
Prepare more than one way to access money and trip information. Install or sign in to the services you plan to use before departure, confirm that your bank can authorize overseas transactions, and keep some RMB cash as a backup. Save key addresses and booking screens locally so a weak connection does not turn a small problem into a blocked journey.
- Original passport and any visa or entry document required for your trip
- Hotel name and full address in Chinese and English
- Offline copies of bookings, emergency contacts, and onward travel
- At least two payment options kept in separate places
2. Leave the airport or station through the correct transport zone
After baggage claim or station exit, decide which transport system you are using before following a crowd. Taxi queues, ride-hailing pickup areas, buses, metro entrances, and private pickups can be separated by floor, exit, or terminal. Follow the permanent signs for your chosen method. If you want a regular taxi, ask for the place where passengers board taxis rather than asking where a taxi happens to be.
At the official taxi queue, wait until it is your turn and show the exact hotel address. A hotel brand alone may not be enough because one city can have several branches with similar names. Keep the Chinese address and a nearby landmark ready, then compare the destination on the driver's phone or meter area before settling in. Wear the seat belt and keep small valuables with you.
Chinese taxi interactions are often brief because the driver needs a destination, not a full explanation of your trip. 师傅 is a normal way to address a driver. A direct place name after 去 is complete and polite in this context; add 谢谢 when the destination is confirmed or the ride ends.
您好,请问出租车在哪里坐?
Nín hǎo, qǐngwèn chūzūchē zài nǎlǐ zuò?
Hello, where can I get a taxi?
坐 makes it clear that you need the official taxi boarding point, not the location of one vehicle.
师傅,去这个地址。
Shīfu, qù zhè ge dìzhǐ.
Driver, please go to this address.
Show the Chinese address while speaking so the exact branch is clear.
3. Check in and understand accommodation registration
At reception, give the reservation name and present the original passport when asked. The request is not merely a hotel preference. Under China's accommodation-registration rules, hotels register foreign guests and submit the required information to the local public security authority. The hotel normally handles this process as part of check-in, so you do not separately visit a police station when staying there.
If you stay somewhere other than a hotel, the rule is different. The National Immigration Administration says the foreign guest or host must complete accommodation registration with the local public security authority within 24 hours after check-in. Local filing channels can differ, so ask the host to confirm the current procedure instead of assuming an online form is available everywhere.
Before leaving reception, confirm the room number, breakfast details if included, checkout time, and how to contact the front desk. Keep the hotel address or a card from reception for the return journey. If staff give a short direction such as 电梯在右边, repeat the key direction if you are unsure rather than pretending to understand.
有,我订了一个房间。
Yǒu, wǒ dìng le yí ge fángjiān.
Yes, I booked a room.
Use this after reception asks whether you have a reservation, then give the booking name.
是的,给您。
Shì de, gěi nín.
Yes, here you are.
A natural short reply when handing your passport to reception after they request it.
4. Connect your phone and build a reliable base
Once you have the room, connect to the hotel's Wi-Fi or confirm that your mobile data works. Ask for the network name as well as the password, because several similarly named networks may appear. Passwords are often spoken as strings of numbers or letters; repeat the uncertain part and confirm whether a sound refers to a number, a letter, or a capital letter.
Use the connection to save the hotel's Chinese address, front-desk number, a map pin, and the nearest metro station or recognizable landmark. Take screenshots of tomorrow's bookings and any QR codes, but remember that some dynamic codes require the original app and cannot be replaced by a screenshot.
Treat the hotel as your information anchor during the first day. Reception can write a destination in Chinese, identify the correct branch on a map, or explain the easiest return route. This is often more useful than translating a long English place description after you are already outside.
你好,请问这里有 Wi-Fi 吗?
Nǐ hǎo, qǐngwèn zhèlǐ yǒu Wi-Fi ma?
Hi, does this place have Wi-Fi?
Follow with 密码是多少? to ask for the password.
不好意思,是数字八吗?
Bù hǎoyìsi, shì shùzì bā ma?
Sorry, is it the number eight?
Use the confirmation pattern 是……吗 when a spoken password is ambiguous.
5. Use mobile payment, cards, and cash without relying on one method
Official guidance for overseas visitors describes several payment options in China: mobile payment, bank cards, and RMB cash. Alipay and WeChat Pay can support international cards, subject to the card issuer, identity verification, product rules, fees, and current app prompts. Set up the account before you need it, but keep a second card and some cash because a verification request or connection problem can interrupt a payment.
At a shop or restaurant, look for accepted card logos rather than assuming every terminal accepts an international card. With mobile payment, either you scan the merchant's code and enter the amount, or the merchant scans the payment code on your phone. Confirm the total before authorizing it and wait for both sides to see the success message. 付了 means 'I've paid'; 收到了 means the merchant has received it.
For a small restaurant, point to a menu item and use 我要 plus the dish and quantity. Ask about ingredients or spice level before ordering if it matters to you; 不要太辣 asks for it not to be too spicy, but it is not an allergy warning. For an allergy or strict dietary restriction, carry a clear written explanation of the ingredient and the consequence rather than relying on a vague preference phrase.
我要一份宫保鸡丁,一碗米饭。
Wǒ yào yí fèn Gōngbǎo jīdīng, yì wǎn mǐfàn.
I'd like one order of kung pao chicken and one bowl of rice.
份 counts a prepared dish; 碗 counts a bowl of rice, soup, or noodles.
你扫我,还是我扫你?
Nǐ sǎo wǒ, háishi wǒ sǎo nǐ?
Will you scan me, or should I scan you?
Ask this when it is unclear whether to show your payment code or scan the merchant's code.
6. Navigate the subway and ask for directions
Metro systems are city-level services, so ticket products, payment methods, apps, and support for foreign bank cards differ. Do not assume a payment method described for one city works nationwide. At the station, use the ticket machine if its interface and payment options suit you; otherwise ask at the service counter how to buy a single journey or enter with an accepted travel code.
To choose the train, you need the line number, direction, transfer station if any, and number of stops. The direction is usually named for a terminal or major station, not simply north or south. Before passing a gate, confirm 往哪个方向坐, 'which direction should I take?' If you transfer, follow 换乘 signs and check the new line's direction again.
On the street, ask for one destination and listen for a short sequence: straight, left or right, crossing, and a landmark. Repeat the order back in smaller pieces. A local person may use a nearby bank, mall, gate, or colored building because it is easier to recognize than a street number; that is practical route-giving, not an expectation that a visitor already knows the area.
您好,请问去市中心坐几号线?
Nín hǎo, qǐngwèn qù shìzhōngxīn zuò jǐ hào xiàn?
Hello, which line should I take to the city center?
Replace 市中心 with your destination; then ask 往哪个方向坐 for the direction.
过马路以后右转,对吗?
Guò mǎlù yǐhòu yòuzhuǎn, duì ma?
Turn right after crossing the road, correct?
Repeat a direction with 对吗 to confirm the order before you leave.
7. Check attraction rules before starting the day
For each major attraction, check the official booking channel, opening day, admission time, and identification requirement before traveling across the city. Some venues use timed reservations or link admission to a passport, while others sell tickets at a staffed window. The details are venue-specific, so bring the original passport when the venue says it is required and do not assume a payment screenshot is an admission credential.
At the ticket window, ask whether tickets remain for today, how many you need, and which entrance to use. Keep the ticket or reservation available until you are inside. If an online interface is difficult, look for a staffed ticket or information counter; current national guidance encourages major tourist attractions to maintain accessible payment and ticketing support, but the actual counter location and hours remain local details.
Inside public spaces, short practical questions are enough. 洗手间 is a common word for restroom, and signs may also use 卫生间 or the English word Toilets. When asking someone to take a photo, first get their attention with 不好意思, make the request, and explain whether you want the phone held vertically or horizontally. Accepting or declining remains the other person's choice.
您好,请问今天还有票吗?
Nín hǎo, qǐngwèn jīntiān hái yǒu piào ma?
Hello, are there still tickets available for today?
Use this at a staffed ticket point; it does not replace checking whether advance booking is required.
不好意思,请问洗手间在哪里?
Bù hǎoyìsi, qǐngwèn xǐshǒujiān zài nǎlǐ?
Excuse me, where is the restroom?
A direct location question that works in restaurants, stations, museums, and shopping centers.
不好意思,能帮我们拍张照吗?
Bù hǎoyìsi, néng bāng wǒmen pāi zhāng zhào ma?
Excuse me, could you take a photo for us?
Use 我 instead of 我们 when asking for a photo of only yourself.
8. Check out, store luggage, and protect the final handoff
Confirm checkout time the night before and leave enough time for reception to review the room account, return any deposit according to the hotel's process, and take the room card. If you want to keep sightseeing, ask whether the hotel can store luggage after checkout and until what time. Storage availability, fees, size limits, and overnight rules belong to the individual hotel, so ask rather than assume.
Count the pieces with staff and label them as requested. Keep the claim tag or receipt separate from the bags, take a photo of it as a backup, and confirm the collection deadline and desk location. Do not leave passports, medicine, electronics, money, or documents you need for the next journey inside stored luggage.
When collecting the bags, show the claim tag and recount the pieces before leaving. Then retrieve the exact airport or station terminal information for the next trip. 'The airport' or 'the railway station' may still describe several terminals or stations, so the final journey needs the same full-address discipline as the first taxi ride.
您好,我想退房,还想寄存一下行李。
Nín hǎo, wǒ xiǎng tuìfáng, hái xiǎng jìcún yíxià xíngli.
Hello, I'd like to check out and also store my luggage.
退房 is check out; 寄存行李 is leave luggage in temporary storage.
可以寄存到下午四点吗?
Kěyǐ jìcún dào xiàwǔ sì diǎn ma?
Can I store it until 4 p.m.?
Replace the time to confirm the latest collection point you actually need.
Common misunderstandings on a first trip
Mobile payment is common, but it is not the only official option and it is not guaranteed to work in every transaction. Keep a card and RMB cash backup. An international bank card is accepted where the relevant payment logo is displayed, not automatically at every small merchant. A metro method that works in one city may not be available in the next.
A hotel asking for your passport is completing accommodation and identity procedures, not showing unusual curiosity. Conversely, a private host saying that no registration is needed does not cancel the legal requirement for non-hotel accommodation; confirm the local filing process within the required time.
Direct speech is not necessarily impolite in routine service interactions. Staff and customers often omit information that is already obvious, so 可以了, 右边, or 二号线 may be a complete answer. Use 请问 to open a question, repeat the critical detail, and say 谢谢 when the task is complete. Clarity matters more than producing a long textbook sentence.
Finally, preserve exact names. A translated hotel brand, a city without its station suffix, or an attraction nickname can point to the wrong place. Save Chinese names and full addresses, compare them on the other person's screen, and keep the original passport accessible whenever a booking or ticket is linked to it.
- Verify entry rules for your own passport, purpose, route, and dates.
- Do not rely on one app, one card, or one live internet connection.
- Hotel registration and private-accommodation registration are different processes.
- Transport and ticketing systems vary by city, venue, and date.
- Use the full Chinese address or place name whenever the exact branch matters.
